This is because the foam is mostly water and, of the common extinguishing agents, water is most effective at removing heat. The problem in using water alone, is that it will 'float' and spread fire in light liquids, such as paraffins (from Octane, right up to waxes) and petroleum and aromatic fuel spirits. Applying water as a foam achieves several benefits: there is little run off, lower surface tension of the foam more readily applies water to the heat source, the foam smothers flame, depriving it of a ready source of oxygen and, as the water boils away to steam, in the fire, every gramme removes more tha n 130 calories of heat energy - weight for weight; this is more than 100 times what carbon dioxide is able to remove and better than fifty times what intumescing powder exinguishers can remove. This size of extinguisher offers useful effect in dealing with small fires whilst being light enough for all adults to manage. The extra weight, about 3.5 Kg, of a 9 litre extinguisher significantly reduces one's ability to run with it, to manipulate it and thus to react properly, in due time; so; for offices, medical rooms and laboratories, especially those occupied by women, the 6 litre size in generally the most useful - remembering that all portable extinguishers compromise fire-fighting capacity against weight and manoeverability. Notes on selection: Powder is more tenacious, though, remaining at the fire seat for longer than foam - although powder removes less heat. Powder extinshing media do not conduct electricty, either but foam and water will, once a surface is thoroughly dampened. Usually, foam extinguishers are the 'best all-rounders' and powder extinguishers can be subject to clogging and so failing, should there be even the tiniest amount of moisture inside the cylinder.This means that the powder extinguisher's gas propellant must contain less than 25 milligrammes of moisture, per cubic metre; whereas compressed air from industrial compressors usually contains about ten thousand times this amount! Foam extinguishers are easily serviced and refilled, after discharge and have high, operational reliability.
